The village of Hill End is on the register of the National Estate,
www.deh.gov.au,
and most local buildings are managed by the National Parks & Wildlife Service as a
‘Historic Site’ of national significance,
www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au.
A well-preserved goldmining ghost town, Hill End is now an important historic site and
a major tourist attraction, drawing thousands of visitors annually. Surrounded by some rugged
mountain and bush country, it is 870m above sea-level and 275km north-west of Sydney. Access
is either via Mudgee or Bathurst. There are three approaches from Bathurst - via Sofala
(78 km), Turondale (69 km) or along the bridle track (57 km). The latter is a scenic route
which follows the Macquarie and Turon Rivers.
The Hill End and Tambaroora Progress Association, or HETPA, is a non-profit community based
organisation. HETPA provides the village of Hill End and surrounding territory with both a means
of community support and a vital asset to local productivity. This web site, HillEnd.org, is
designed to further spread the word of the historic village of Hill End, as well as that of HETPA.
The Hill End newsletter, titled 'The Stamper Battery', offers the village a two-monthy blurb about the
latest local events and happenings.
