WALKS:
Golden Gully Arch
3.5km drive along Mudgee Rd,
look for small green sign at pull in area on left, saying "The Arch".
Park here, descend into the gully,
and head townwards, back up the far right line of the gully,
within barely 100 metres The main Arch will be encountered.
This gully's flow has been diverted several times,
by tunneling through adjacent ridges,
these tunnels, over time erode into arches.
Originally a major 1850's alluvial goldfield,
several hundred Chinese miners once worked through this area.
Note too the circular tunnels burrowed into the banks.
Further evidence of Chinese mining style.
Irishtown/Bald Hill Mine Walk
Commence walk just across rd. from P.O., right of cricket oval.
Signs will lead you on a 1/2 hr. stroll past a stamper batttery, head uphill past old shafts,
over the crest you will soon see evidence of cottages long gone, the remains of Irishtown.
Further on downhill to your right, pass by sites of old brickworks, and stamper battery sites.
A huge earthen dam wall can be seen as you cross Hill End Creek,
and climb uphill to the Bald Hill Mine entrance .
(Note mine is locked, tours available through Great Western Store.)
Head across flat grassy area adjacent to mine,
back down into the creek, and turn left back to town.
Wind past creek diversions, a small quartz reef, more dams,
then across the rolling hill back to cricket pitch.
Once a walk through a noisy, industrious sector of town,
now a pleasent bush stroll.
